Boilers and chillers are heavy, awkward, and often installed in tight mechanical rooms or on roofs — so the rigging (getting it out) is the hard part, not the haul. Drain and disconnect, rig it out on skates or by crane, keep it upright, move it on a flatbed or step deck by weight and height, and set it for reconnection.
Boilers and chillers are classic rigging problems: heavy machines installed in the worst possible place to get something out of — a basement mechanical room, a penthouse, or a rooftop behind a screen wall. The truck is the easy part. Getting the unit out and the new one in is the job.
Access decides the plan
Before weight or trailer, the first question is how does it get out. A rooftop chiller usually comes off by crane — which means a lift plan, a pick point, and street or lot access for the crane. A basement boiler comes out on skates through corridors and up a ramp or freight elevator, or through a knocked-out wall panel. Measure the path to the inch: doorways, turns, ceiling height, floor ratings. Many of these units were set before the walls closed in, so the exit is tighter than the entrance ever was.

Drain, disconnect, recover
Before anything moves, the trades drain the water side, disconnect electrical, gas, and piping, and cap the lines. Chillers hold refrigerant that has to be recovered by a licensed technician before the unit travels — that's a code and environmental requirement, not an option. Getting these disconnects sequenced with the rigging crew keeps the move from stalling.
Rigging and transport
The unit gets rigged from its frame or designated lift points, kept level, and moved on air skates or by crane. Coils, fin tubes, gauges, and control panels are fragile — they get protected and never carry load. On the truck, most boilers and chillers ride a flatbed or step deck chosen by weight and height (a tall chiller wants the step deck's lower deck), upright, blocked and braced at the base, chained to the frame. This is the same rigging and machinery moving discipline as any heavy plant equipment.
Set and reconnect
At the destination the unit is rigged into the mechanical room or onto the roof pad, set level on its supports, and handed back to the trades for piping, electrical, refrigerant charge, and startup. Level matters — a chiller or boiler that isn't sitting right on its supports can strain connections and mounts.
