Gensets ship upright on the base frame — flatbed to about 45,000 lbs, step-deck for tall enclosures, RGN beyond that. Run the fuel tank down, lift and chain the skid (never the enclosure), and pull per-state permits once the load passes 8'6" wide, 13'6" tall, or 80,000 lbs gross.
A genset is a diesel engine, an alternator, and a steel base frame that usually doubles as the fuel tank. That base frame is the only part built to be lifted, chained, and hauled — ship it like general freight and you pay in dented enclosures, cracked isolators, and a warranty fight.
Know the weight class first
Generator moves sort into three buckets, and everything — trailer, loading gear, permits — flows from the bucket:
- Portable and towable units (under roughly 5,000 lbs). The 20–50 kW rental and light-tower class. Flatbed, hotshot, or even LTL with a forklift on both ends.
- Commercial standby gensets (5,000–25,000 lbs). The 100–500 kW skid and enclosure units behind hospitals and telecom sites. Flatbed or step-deck territory.
- Prime-power and data-center class (25,000 lbs and up). The 750 kW to 2 MW+ packages, often in 20–40 ft sound-attenuated enclosures or ISO containers. Step-decks, RGNs, and multi-axle lowboys, usually with a crane at both ends.
Pull the spec plate before you ask for a quote: dry weight, wet weight, length-width-height with the enclosure on, and base tank capacity. "About the size of a pickup" gets you the wrong trailer.
Fuel and fluids: run it down
Diesel weighs roughly 7 lbs per gallon, so a full 1,000-gallon base tank adds about 7,000 lbs — enough to change the trailer, the axle math, and whether the load is legal at all. Most carriers want the tank near empty; some receivers require it dry with documentation.
- Run the tank down or pump it out before pickup.
- Coolant and oil normally stay in, but cap every vent and check for weeps.
- Disconnect the batteries, tape the terminals, and latch every enclosure door.
Skid vs. enclosure: the skid does the work
The base frame is structural steel, engineered for lifting and tie-down. The enclosure is thin sheet metal over acoustic foam. Every lift and every chain goes to the skid — never to panels, roof rails, or door hinges.
Some enclosures carry a rated single-point lifting bail — use it only if the data plate confirms the rating. Otherwise rig the base frame with a spreader bar so slings clear the walls. Open-skid units rig easier but need tarps or a Conestoga over the control panel and alternator.
Trailer choice by weight and height
- Flatbed: up to roughly 45,000 lbs of cargo. Deck sits near 5 ft, so the enclosure can stand about 8'6" before hitting the 13'6" legal ceiling.
- Step-deck: same weight class, but the lower deck (around 3'6") buys roughly 10 ft of cargo height. The default for taller enclosures.
- RGN / lowboy: for units past roughly 40,000 lbs or 10 ft tall. The well sits near 24 inches, and added axles carry gross weights past 80,000 lbs under permit.
The legal envelope: 8'6" wide, 13'6" tall, about 53 ft long, 80,000 lbs gross. Radiator packages blow the width limit more often than people expect — measure the widest point, louvers and lugs included.

Loading: forklift, crane, or rigging crew
Under about 10,000 lbs, a properly rated forklift handles it — forks through the skid's fork pockets, not under the tank. Up to 25,000 lbs you are into a large-capacity lift truck or a crane with a spreader bar and rated shackles in the base-frame lift points. Above that, plan on a crane at both ends, or a machinery moving crew with gantries and skates when the unit starts or ends inside a building. The lift crew needs lift points, center of gravity (offset toward the engine end), and spreader dimensions before the truck shows up.
Securement: chain the frame
Chains and binders go to the skid's designated tie-down points or lift lugs — minimum four direct tie-downs, with an aggregate working load limit of at least half the cargo weight under federal securement rules. Straps over the enclosure roof are how you buy a new enclosure. Permits for the big units
Once the loaded dimensions pass 8'6" wide or 13'6" tall, or gross weight passes 80,000 lbs, every state on the route issues its own oversize/overweight permit with its own routing, travel hours, and escort thresholds. Permit dimensions must match the load exactly — measure after loading, not off the brochure. That is standard heavy haul work, planned a week out like a transformer move, not a day.
Bottom line
- The base frame is the shipping structure. Lift it, chain it, and block it there — never on the enclosure.
- Run the fuel down — a full base tank can add thousands of pounds.
- Flatbed to roughly 45,000 lbs, step-deck for tall enclosures, RGN or lowboy with permits beyond the 8'6" x 13'6" x 80,000-lb envelope.
- Big units need a rigging plan and per-state permits before pickup day — built on spec-plate numbers, not guesses.
