A Conestoga is a flatbed with a retractable tarp on a rolling frame. It gives you dry-van weather protection with flatbed loading access — crane from above, forklift from the side — and closes in minutes instead of a two-hour tarp job. You give up roughly 6 to 10 inches of cargo height and about 2,000 to 4,000 lbs of payload to the system.
A Conestoga solves one specific problem: freight that needs weather protection but cannot be loaded through the back doors of a dry van. Instead of tarping a flatbed by hand, you roll a curtain over the load on a frame.
How it actually works
The trailer is a flatbed underneath. Over it sits a tarp stretched on a rolling steel frame that retracts to one end like a concertina. Open, it is a flatbed — crane from directly overhead, forklift from either side. Closed, the load is sealed against rain, road spray, and dust.
Opening or closing takes one person a few minutes. Tarping an equivalent flatbed load properly takes two people the better part of an hour or two, in whatever weather is happening at the time. On a multi-stop run, that difference compounds fast.

Nothing is free. The frame and curtain take up space and weight:

So you lose roughly 6 to 10 inches of height to the frame and somewhere around 2,000 to 4,000 lbs of payload compared to a bare flatbed. If your load is right at the legal or weight ceiling, that matters. If it is not, you will never notice.
Conestoga vs the alternatives
- vs flatbed: Same loading access, far better weather protection, no tarp crew. Costs more, and you give up a little height and payload.
- vs dry van: Same weather protection, but you can load from the top and both sides instead of only through the rear doors. Critical for anything a forklift cannot roll in — machinery that has to be craned or slid on from the side.
- vs tarped flatbed: Same protection on paper, but tarps chafe, pool water, and tear in transit. A curtain does not. On repeat lanes the labor savings alone usually pay the difference.
What about a double-drop Conestoga?
They exist, and they are genuinely rare. A double-drop Conestoga puts the rolling curtain over a lowered well, so you get weather protection for freight taller than a standard deck allows — roughly 10 feet inside the curtain instead of 8. Availability is thin and lead times are longer, so book early. For most tall covered freight, a double-drop with a purpose-built cover or shrink wrap moves sooner and costs less.
When to use one
- Machinery, control panels, or electrical gear that cannot get wet but must be craned or side-loaded.
- Palletized freight that would need tarping on every leg of a multi-stop run.
- Finished or painted goods where tarp chafe would damage the surface.
- Any lane where weather is unpredictable and tarping time is eating your schedule.
