Call five carriers about moving an excavator and you will hear "lowboy" and "RGN" thrown around like they are the same trailer. They are not. The difference decides whether your machine drives on under its own power or hangs off a crane, whether it clears bridges without an over-height permit, and how much of the legal gross weight is left for the load itself. Lowboy is the family. RGN is one member of it.
A lowboy is any semi-trailer whose deck drops into a well between the gooseneck and the rear axles. The whole point is deck height. A standard flatbed rides around five feet off the ground; a lowboy well typically sits 18 to 24 inches up. With the common legal height limit at 13'6", that low well is what lets an 11-foot-tall machine run the interstate as a legal-height load instead of a permitted one.
"RGN" — removable gooseneck — describes how the front of the trailer works, not how low it sits. On an RGN, the neck detaches from the deck. The tractor pulls forward, the front of the deck drops to the ground, and the trailer becomes its own loading ramp. Every RGN is a lowboy. Not every lowboy is an RGN.
Fixed-neck lowboys: lighter, longer deck, rear-load only
A fixed gooseneck (FGN) lowboy keeps its neck permanently attached. That buys a lighter trailer — less structure, no detach hardware — and since the 80,000-pound gross limit covers tractor, trailer, and cargo combined, every pound of trailer you shed goes back to payload. Fixed necks also tend to give the lowest ride height and more usable deck for the same overall length.
The tradeoff is loading. Nothing drives on from the front. Your options are rear ramps, a dock, or a crane setting the piece from above. For a dead press or a transformer that is getting rigged and lifted anyway, that costs you nothing. For an operable dozer, it is the wrong tool.
RGNs: the trailer that turns into a ramp
Drop the neck and the front edge of the deck sits on the ground at a shallow angle. Tracked and wheeled equipment — excavators, dozers, pavers, scrapers, rough-terrain forklifts — walks straight on, gets chained down over the well, and the neck pins back on. No crane, no dock, no portable ramps to wrestle.
Two versions matter when you book one:
- Mechanical RGN: the neck detaches using the tractor's motion and manual work. Lighter and simpler, but slower to cycle, and it wants firm, level ground.
- Hydraulic RGN (HRGN): hydraulics raise, lower, and detach the neck, and many can adjust deck height on the fly to shave inches off a tight load. Faster and more forgiving on rough sites, but the hydraulics add trailer weight that comes straight out of payload.

Axles are where capacity actually comes from
Neither name tells you what the trailer can legally carry. Capacity comes from axle count and spacing, not the badge on the neck. Under the 80,000-pound gross limit, a tandem-axle lowboy handles mid-weight machines all day. Past that, you do not switch trailer families — you add axles: a flip axle at the rear, a jeep dolly between tractor and neck, a booster behind the trailer. This is where RGNs take over. The removable neck is built to pin into jeeps and accept boosters, which is why nearly every serious multi-axle configuration on the road is built around an RGN. Overweight loads then run on permits calculated from those axle spacings, state by state.
Which trailer the load actually calls for
- Operable tracked or wheeled equipment: RGN. Drive it on, chain it down, go. Default for excavators, dozers, and loaders.
- Dead or non-running machinery being craned: fixed-neck lowboy. You are lifting anyway, and the lighter trailer buys payload and deck length.
- Tall but not especially heavy pieces: either works — check deck height against the machine and compare a step deck before committing to lowboy equipment at all.
- Loads above legal gross: multi-axle RGN with jeep and booster, permits, and possibly escorts. Engineered-move territory.
What moves the cost
No amounts here — just the levers. RGNs, especially hydraulic and multi-axle units, are scarcer than flatbeds and step decks, so lane and timing matter more. Over-dimensional loads add state permits; overweight adds axle-based permitting; some routes require escort vehicles or surveys.
